6G | Coders at the Crossroads: KPI Pressure, RCM Burdens, and the Hidden Labor Behind Clean Claims
This session explores how coder responsibilities have expanded far beyond code assignment, especially in the wake of ongoing changes to the coding datasets, wider implementation of computer assisted coding and often unrealistic KPIs. As an example of the increased complexity and coder responsibilities, we will briefly view the AMA-CPT 2027 maternity care revisions. We’ll examine the rising burden of coder responsibilities for reviewing and correcting claim edits, denials, documentation gaps, and AI oversight, with OB serving as the prime example of how structural changes impact coder workload. Attendees will learn how to recognize increased coding complexity, what may need to be redesigned in KPIs, and other potential problems that can lead to increased coding complexity. Real case studies and audience‑submitted CAC hallucinations will highlight both the challenges and the humor in today’s coding environment.
