Through training, tools, and services, AAPC helps organizations improve coding accuracy and strengthen revenue cycle operations — reducing denials and protecting revenue.
Why AAPC matters in revenue cycle management
Accurate coding and clear documentation directly impact how healthcare is reimbursed and measured. AAPC provides education and solutions that drive revenue integrity, reduce risk, and help teams stay aligned with evolving regulatory and payer requirements.
How AAPC empowers the healthcare workforce
AAPC supports the people behind the revenue cycle by setting the standard for professional excellence. Through nationally recognized credentials, workforce development, and ongoing education, AAPC ensures individuals are prepared not just to enter the field — but to keep pace as healthcare evolves.
Problems AAPC helps solve
Revenue cycle performance depends on accurate information, clear communication, and a well-trained workforce. When these areas are misaligned, the impact extends beyond operations to the quality, continuity, and cost of care.
Common challenges include:
Inconsistent coding and documentation practices that affect reimbursement and data accuracy
Significant gaps in workforce readiness across coding, CDI, compliance, and auditing roles
Limited visibility into performance, making it difficult to identify and correct issues early
High denial rates, rework, and administrative burden
Increased audit risk tied to documentation and coding accuracy
How AAPC helps
AAPC brings together the expertise, insights, and real-world application needed to help teams perform at a higher level across the revenue cycle. This approach is built to support how work actually gets done — not just how it’s taught. This includes:
Coding accuracy training aligned to real-world documentation
Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) education
Third-party auditing and coding services to identify gaps and reduce risk
Workforce development across coding, compliance, and revenue integrity
Tools such as Codify® by AAPC and Practicode that support coding accuracy and performance

Since every organization faces its own set of challenges, AAPC’s subject matter experts take a tailored approach, working closely with teams to understand their goals, operational realities, and what’s getting in the way of better performance. From there, solutions are designed to address what matters most. The result is stronger revenue integrity, reduced risk, and more consistent, reliable outcomes.
Industry growth and impact
Demand for skilled healthcare professionals continues to grow. Job growth for medical records specialists is projected to increase 9% by 2033 — faster than the average across occupations.
As healthcare becomes more complex, the role these professionals play is becoming more critical. All U.S. physicians and hospitals are required to use standardized medical codes to report the services associated with patient care. These codes directly impact reimbursement and are reviewed by auditors and compliance professionals to ensure accuracy and compliance.
AAPC plays a central role in supporting a stronger, more capable workforce and a more effective revenue cycle — helping organizations manage risk, protect revenue, and support better patient outcomes.
AAPC's history
AAPC was founded in 1988 as the American Academy of Professional Coders, with a focus on providing education and certification for coders working in physician-based settings.
As the organization expanded beyond coding to include auditing, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI), compliance, and broader revenue cycle management, its role within healthcare grew significantly. To reflect this broader scope, the organization transitioned to using “AAPC” as its official name — representing its expanded impact across the business of healthcare.
