Medical decision making (MDM) for evaluation and management (E/M) coding is not always as clear cut as coders and auditors wish. However, one of the best ways to learn how to properly judge E/M MDM is to practice, practice, practice. In this session we will examine the clinical documentation of multiple E/M services cases to determine the overall level of MDM. We will dive deep into the three subcomponents of MDM: (1) Number and complexity of problems addressed at the encounter, (2) amount and/or complexity of data to be reviewed and analyzed, and (3) risk of complications and/or morbidity or mortality of patient management. The presenter, who is a doctor and certified coder, will provide a clinical perspective on MDM and how better understanding clinical aspects of conditions can aid coders and auditors in their MDM judgement. If you have specific MDM questions or scenarios, submit them to the presenter at cjwolf@codermedschool.com at least two weeks before the conference. Common themes in the questions received will be addressed during the session.
